Snow White and the Huntsman

When you are in a relationship, you have to make sacrifices. Whether it be selling some prized possessions or working a job you don't like to make ends meet, sacrifices are made. For me, I have to see movies I know won't be good.

First World Problems.

Snow White and the Huntsman is the same story, more or less, that we all know but closer to the original German version than the fabricated version, filled with flowers and rainbows that most people know from Disney. An evil queen, who rules the land she stole from Snow White and her family with an Iron fist, becomes jealous when Snow White is declared the fairest in the land by the magical mirror. She then demands that Snow White be brought to her so she can steal her heart and become immortal, forever being the fairest of them all.

I really enjoyed the fact that this steered away from the cutesy Snow White that Disney has created and leaned more towards the dark Adventure written by the Brothers Grimm. The German version of all the fairy tales are one thousand times better than the versions tainted and softened by Disney. That being said, the could have picked a better actress for the title role.

Kristen Stewart was definitely at her best in this movie. But that is still relatively average. As always, her face didn't change much.

This is obviously a joke, and exaggerated, but its not far from the truth.

There were times where she was supposed to be happy and she looked angry, and times where she was supposed to be sad but looked surprised (with no hint of sadness). And it didn't help that she was surrounded by good actors.

Chris Hemsworth, who for some reason has been almost all of the movies I have reviewed on my blog, had so much more skill than Stewart, and it made her look even worse than she would normally. But at the same time, I think it raised her skill. She had to keep up with him, but it was still like seeing the Big Mac they put together for commercials next to the one you actually get at McDonald's.

Overall, this movie was sub par. But there was one aspect of it that was amazing. The dwarves. Unlike other Snow White movies, they didn't get little people to play the dwarves. They had such great actors as Ian McShane, Bob Hoskins, Ray Winstone, Nick Frost, Eddie Marsan and Toby Jones playing them. Their heads were superimposed seamlessly onto the bodies of little people. I think. I'm not even 100% sure how they did it. It was the first time in a long time that I had seen something I knew was a visual effect, but couldn't see the flaw in it. It was fantastic.

And the characters were hilarious. I felt no connection with any of the characters until the dwarves came on screen.

My Rating: C

Juaquin Phoenix Is Back! (And the first Teaser for New Bond Film)

While browsing around imdb.com today, I found two videos that made me wish that the world would just decide to skip summer and go straight into fall. I soon realized that if that were to happen I wouldn't see The Dark Knight Rises or Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter in theaters.

The first of the two videos was the first trailer for the new James Bond movie, Skyfall.

MMMMMMM!!!! What's not to like about this trailer? You have Daniel Craig, who, in my opinion (which is not that of someone who would consider himself a huge Bond fan, so all you 007  diehards can calm yourselves!), is the best Bond. Directed by Sam Mendes (Road to Perdition, American Beauty) and with the beautiful cinematography of the always great Roger Deakins (The Assassination of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford, O Brother, Where Art Thou), this Bond flick looks very promising.

Shortly there after, I saw a clip from Paul Thomas Anderson's new movie, The Master, starring Joaquin Phoenix in his first on screen appearance since his fake mental breakdown for publicity for I'm Still Here.

This is Paul Thomas Anderson's first film since 2007's There Will Be Blood. And it would seem that he is starting up right where he left off. If you haven't seen any of Paul Thomas Anderson's films, do yourself a favor and go see There Will Be Blood, Boogie Nights, and Punch Drunk Love. All are fantastic movies.

Joaquin Phoenix looks amazing in this. He is amazing in most of his work, but given that this is his first film since I'm Still Here, I am even more impressed. I would never have expected him to be in such a seemingly dark and complicated role right after being in character for 8 months. He is a great actor, and I am extremely happy that him quitting was all a publicity stunt.

One of the biggest tragedies of the whole debacle when Joaquin Phoenix said he was quitting acting for good, and was having a documentary about him pursuing a rap career, later to only reveal that he was just in character the whole time, is the fact that he didn't get nominated for anything!

He fooled the entire country into thinking he was really quitting acting to become a rapper and they just shrug it off! Jesse Eisenberg was nominated for his work in The Social Network, when really, it was just Jesse Eisenberg playing Jesse Eisenberg if he were a dick! How does that "surpass" Joaquin Phoenix for staying in character for almost 8 months?

As time goes on, and more movies are marketing themselves, I am getting more excited every day for movies this year. Let's hope 2012 beats the lack luster year of 2011

Skyfall is scheduled to release November 9th, 2012.

The Master is scheduled to release October 12th, 2012.

Movies To Look Out For In 2012

Just a list of movies I am looking forward to this year. I will more than likely see them all, unless something bad happens!

Prometheus coming June 8th.

Now, there are a lot of people that are saying this is a prequel to the Alien movies. But that's not true. It was originally intended to be the prequel, Director Ridley Scott thought it was strong enough to be it's own film. I, for one, prefer it that way.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter coming June 22nd.

If you've been following me thus far, you know I am excited for this movie. I dedicated an entire post to it. I need help. Look below for my post about this movie.

Seeking A Friend For The End Of The World coming June 22nd.

This movie seems like the most original concept for a comedy we have seen in a while. Taking a morbid scenario and turning it into what looks like a fun, entertaining comedy is definitely something I have never seen before. And with Steve Carell as the leading man, I expect this to be rather good.

Ted coming July 13th.

I don't have any comment about this other than it looks hilarious.

The Dark Knight Rises coming July 20th.

I don't think Christopher Nolan has made a bad movie. And I don't think this will be an exception. With the final installment of Nolan's Batman franchise, this should be an intense movie.

Neighborhood Watch coming July 27th.

Richard Ayoade is the main reason I want to see this. It looks funny.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey coming December 14th.

Need I say more?

Unfortunately, that is it for now. Hopefully, as the year plays out, more will come up.
